Investing points in following skills help:

Scavenge: experience in searching and fishing. Modifies fishing speed and chance to find hidden objects (spear or fishing-rod needed as fishing tool).

Traps: The detection and removal of traps or building weaknesses. Hunting in the woods with traps (need Trapskill 50 or higher) or use of explosives for demolition purposes.

Survival: Experience in preparing a shelter to recover from injuries and toxins. Chance to start a fire without lighter. (You need as Sleeping bag or Pelt to go to sleep)

It can be very useful to find the following tools

Knife: not so for fighting but needed to skin and part hunt animals (most random encounter locations at a beach have shells, that can be used as knife, in some random encounters you can find a wood splinter that can be used as knife. Steel Knives can be rare for most characters at the beginning.

Fishing-Rod / Spear: having that equipt, standing near a stream or lake enables you to fish automatically. Cought fish goes into you cooler.

Lighter: You need a lighter or a high Survival skill to start a camp fire (and wood or any paper as fuel).

Sleeping Bag / Pelt: need it to go to sleep (healing mode). Pelts can be savaged by skinning big animals (wolves/deers/cows)
