The Sum is a Survival RPG, meaning an important part of the game is to survive!

Introduction

You get experience (Autonomy Points) for just surviving (as time pass) and additional Points for quests or for winning a fight.

It is essential to focus on gathering food as if you do not eat, you will eventually starve to death.

Investing points

Investing points in following skills help:

Scavenge: experience in searching and fishing. Modifies fishing speed and chance to find hidden objects (spear or fishing-rod needed as fishing tool).

Traps: The detection and removal of traps or building weaknesses. Hunting in the woods with traps (need Trapskill 50 or higher) or use of explosives for demolition purposes.

Survival: Experience in preparing a shelter to recover from injuries and toxins. Chance to start a fire without lighter. (You need as Sleeping bag or Pelt to go to sleep)

It can be very useful to find the following tools

Knife: not so for fighting but needed to skin and part hunt animals (most random encounter locations at a beach have shells, that can be used as knife, in some random encounters you can find a wood splinter that can be used as knife. Steel Knives can be rare for most characters at the beginning.

Fishing-Rod / Spear: having that equipt, standing near a stream or lake enables you to fish automatically. Cought fish goes into you cooler.

Lighter: You need a lighter or a high Survival skill to start a camp fire (and wood or any paper as fuel).

Sleeping Bag / Pelt: need it to go to sleep (healing mode). Pelts can be savaged by skinning big animals (wolves/deers/cows)

What to do first

  • Stay out of fights at the very begin of game!
  • Find a food source!
  • Some random encounter locations have food on it (mushroom, fruits, roots): If you find such place, keep in mind the position of the Square you found it, and visit it again by clicking on that square (if your food suplies are running low).
  • If you found fishing equiptment, look out for river or lake squares, as most have bodies of water where you can fish. (Do not go or cross in open water squares, or save your game before doing so)
  • Random encounters are fixed to the sqare as well: if you encounter a deer, it is quite likely you will encounter another if traveling around that map square (same with bandits or any other random encounter).
  • Beware some random locations can be quite deadly and such squares should be not crossed, or you might turn up dead if you trigger a random encounter. (later in game with certain skills or tools that can be ignored)
  • If you find a good food square it is good to travel around that square, or just trigger this random map by clicking on your position. On it, collect food / fish / skin (double-click on an animal carcas in your inventory) / make a fire / cook (cooked food is better than a cold dish. Boil (cook) all water before drinking it! Max 5 x water / animal type per campfire/map). Exit random encounter (do not forget to save game), and redo, until you have the food stash you need for a longer travel.
  • Mind that while doing so you will gain Experience points.
  • After you are well prepared you can focus on traveling!
  • In the time you did your preperations, you should have leveled some levels, use the skill points wisely (wait with leveling weapon traits before you have found a weapon you can use (or focus on unarmed)).

Tools/Equiptment

  • Clothes: wearing clothes saves you from freezing to death.
  • Rope: can be used to climb down (and out again) specific areas (holes & shafts offering a solid grip).
